 Program Overview   study in america

Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. Graduate students choose between two areas of concentration: Nursing Education and Acute / Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist (Adult). Students interested in a focus in Nursing Education may complete the degree in three semesters (one continuous year) of study. Students interested in a focus in Acute / Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist may complete a program of study in four semesters (16 months). Through specific coursework, graduate students are prepared to conduct research and serve in nursing faculty and/or clinical leadership roles. Students may choose part-time or full-time enrollment. Master's prepared nurses may qualify to complete a Nurse Educator Certificate course of study.

The purpose of this program is to prepare professional nursing leaders in advanced specialty areas of nursing. Areas of concentration in the graduate program can be practiced in a variety of health care delivery systems and settings. The program builds upon baccalaureate preparation in nursing and is based on processes of advanced clinical practice; advanced theoretical application; social, economic, and political interpretation; professional role development; and legal and ethical analyses. The program provides the opportunity for students to think and write analytically and theoretically, to strengthen an area of practice, to apply theory to practice, to apply meaning and understanding in practice, and to develop skills of inquiry.

Graduate Program Outcomes

At the completion of the program the graduate will:
• Articulate and model a personal philosophy of nursing that is consistent with nursing theory, ethics, professional standards, and Christian caring.
• Collaborate with the client, family, communities, health care providers, and others to promote, maintain, and restore health across the lifespan.
• Apply knowledge of liberal arts, sciences, nursing theories, educational theories, and frameworks to the advanced nursing role and the role of the educator.
• Utilize and disseminate research in nursing practice and education.
• Use a variety of communication skills and information technology to provide health care and education within multiple settings.
• Provide leadership to effect improvements in healthcare and nursing education through integration of the nursing discipline with liberal arts and sciences.
• Utilize skills to improve standards of care for clients, nurses, students, and other professionals, communities, health care delivery systems, and society.
• Evidence a commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning.
• Construct a foundation for the pursuit of doctoral education.
• Apply principles of decision-making, critical thinking, and independent judgment to the role of the advanced practice nurse and nurse educator.

 Admissions   study in america

Admission Requirements:

• Graduation from an accredited baccalaureate nursing program.
• An undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 – 2.99 on a 4.0 scale in the upper division undergraduate nursing courses may be conditionally accepted. Conditionally accepted students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher during either one semester of full-time coursework or two semesters of part-time coursework to remove their conditional status.
• A current unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Georgia.
• Satisfactory score on either the Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last five years. Codes for submission of GRE score are Mercer University Atlanta: R5025; Nursing Department/Major Code: 0610. The College of Nursing code for the MAT is #1109. Prior graduate level coursework MAY exempt the student from the MAT or GRE requirement.
• A 300-word essay describing professional goals and reason for seeking graduate education.
• Satisfactory completion of both an undergraduate statistics (may be waived) and a nursing research course.
• Evidence of completion of a physical assessment course.
• A minimum of one year of work experience as a professional Registered Nurse (may be waived).
• Three letters of professional reference from individuals who can address the applicant's ability to successfully complete graduate study. At least one of the letters must be from a master's degree prepared nurse. Applicants who have completed graduate level coursework within the last five (5) years in a nursing program must include a faculty reference from that program.
• International student applicants, or students whose prior basic education was completed in another country, must demonstrate proficiency in English in one of the following ways:
   a. Submit an official score report of the TOEFL from the Educational Testing Service. A composite score of 80 is required on the TOEFL, as well as minimum scores of 18 in each of the subtests in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
   b. Complete the Mercer University English Language Institute (MUELI). Students enrolled in the Mercer University ELI program may register for up to six credit hours in graduate studies, with approval of the student's academic advisor, while completing the upper levels of the ELI program at Mercer University.
• An interview with the Associate Dean for the Graduate Program or faculty designee.
• A $50 nonrefundable application fee payable by check or money order.

 Expenses and Financial Support   study in america

The purpose of the Mercer University Office of Student Financial Planning is to provide information and assistance to students who need funds to attend college. Mercer believes that the primary responsibility for a student’s educational costs rests with the student and his or her family. Financial assistance is available only for meeting the difference between the potential resources (such as parents’ contribution, student’s summer earnings, outside scholarships, etc.) and expenses. This assistance may include a combination of scholarships, loans, grants, and part-time employment.

To assist the University in determining a student’s financial need, a standard need-analysis system is used. This confidential system analyzes income and asset data provided by the student and parent(s). The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the need-analysis method used by Mercer.
